Communicating Professionally

Communication is not only a necessity at the academic level it is also important at the professional level. It is an important skill in every field and to a degree so is grammar.

Grammar is not only important at the academic level but also at the professional level. Both Susan Adams from Forbes and Kyle Weins, writing in the Harvard Business Review have touched on this subject with very similar arguments. While Ms. Adams provide points such as how it demonstrates the intellect of a person by the level of grammar they use, it promotes an individual’s organizational skills. She also suggest that the use of correct grammar provokes a feeling to a person that the particular person will be skillful at the obstacle at hand, and in that regard demands a level of respect from the receiving end(Adams). Mr. Weins on the other hand will outright throw away an applicant’s resume and application if their grammar is not up to par with what he is looking for. His reasons for this are that grammar portrays on paper and other platforms what physically is not there, and  it demonstrates that an individual is likely to  make far fewer errors on unrelated matters than an individual that cannot distinguish the difference between “to,” “too,” and “two.”   He also stresses that grammar promotes the attention to detail attribute in people and it benefits businesses to hire people that use impeccable grammar (Weins).

With the ambition to become a secondary school history teacher I would need not only a bachelor degree but also a license given by the state to be eligible to teach. The level of communication I would need to be a successful teacher would be extraordinary, with having to speak to not only the students on a day to day basis but also with parents and faculty. Since I would be molding the minds of young individuals it would behoove me to exhaust all efforts on trying to enhance my grammar and editing skills because part of the profession of teaching is that I will have to grade papers and make sure my pupils are completing their assignments to the best of their abilities, which cannot be done if I myself cannot edit their work thoroughly and correctly. While grammar is an attribute I would use immensely with the proofreading of papers and other assignments it will also be beneficial with daily speech to help convey certain points in lectures (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Up to this point in my academic career, I believed my grammar and communication skills were exceptional but during the duration of this English course I have found that I in fact needed a refresher on some of the basics. This class has taught me the importance of correct comma placement and sentence structure in general, college has also helped me particular verbiage that I was unfamiliar with before my initiation. With my continuation of the pursuit of a degree I want to improve on my communication skills tremendously, to ensure that I can teach with the utmost confidence in myself to help others with the same problems I have come across. I plan to take more college level English classes as well as creative writing and public speech so that way it really resonates with me how correct communication can be applied and how it should come across.

In conclusion, the use of proper communication and grammar can make all the difference in the world. It shows that an individual can be resourceful, calculating, and can pay attention to detail.
